Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) provide interactive programmes designed to be studied online by large numbers of students. What is best about them is that they are usually FREE!
If you want to expand your aviation knowledge, improve your CV or simply look what it is like to be a part of university you have come to the right blog article.
MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) have become very popular in the past few years and present a great opportunity for students to receive a top class tuition from the world’s best universities. One of the leaders in aviation and aerospace education “Embry – Riddle Aeronautical University” has launched two different courses: “Aviation 101” and “The Human Factor in Aviation”. The former you can start anytime you want, while the latter has a specific start date.
Aviation 101 “…teaches you a lot of the ground knowledge
that you need to know to be a successful pilot.”
The course is split into three parts, each part made of three lessons, followed by a test. You must pass the quizzes in each lesson with scores of at least 70% to gain access to the test. The first part consists of aircraft systems, aerodynamics and flight instruments. I have to say that these are one of the best illustrations and animations of how things work, in particular flight instruments, that are out there in the market to learn from. There are no text files, just video lessons on which you can take notes, so everything is explained in a very accessible way.
The second part is made of airports, airspace, radio communication and ATC, while in the third part you will learn about aeromedical factors, performance, navigation and weather.
That is pretty much all of the subjects studied on PPL level so if you are curious about what is it to be a pilot, have a general interest in aviation or you are a pilot yourself this course is worth completing.
You can complete the course at your own pace and there are no deadlines. It usually takes a week or two and at the end of the course you get a completion certificate!
